  3. World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022

The 28th of April 2022 marks World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This is an awareness-raising campaign that promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases worldwide.

Established in 2003, World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed every year by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). ILO capitalise on their strengths of tripartism and social dialogue to promote rights at work, encourage employment opportunities, increase social protection, and drive discussion on work-related issues.

According to ILO, “Every day, 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases across the world – more than 2.3 million deaths per year. Three hundred seventeen million accidents occur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work.”

As scientists, we have an innate desire and duty of care to protect and prevent accidents and diseases. In doing so, we have developed a strong occupational safety and health (OSH) culture that values and safeguards our employees. Built on inclusion, we work together to find effective, appropriate, and sustainable solutions that promote the right to health and safety in the laboratory.

We have implemented sound prevention, inspection, and reporting practices that follow OSH standards to prevent occupational accidents. What’s more, we have developed an H&S committee dedicated to safety in the workplace.

The H&S Committee is a group of volunteers from across a broad range of roles that are both office and lab-based, with a focus on safety within the workplace. This ensures that H&S policies are designed for all parts of the business, whether a worker is based at a desk or donning a lab coat. Recently, several H&S committee members attended IOSH training which has provided our team with extended knowledge of managing H&S at work.

When designing and developing bespoke methods for our client’s research needs, it’s imperative that our laboratory environment is sterile and compliant. Between goggles, lab coats and gloves, we have an extensive PPE roster than ensures safety but also the integrity of our assays.
