THE ROLE
The Scientific Director – Operations role is a senior position within our Study Management team, combining operational management with strategic marketing. You will be an expert within your field, providing the team with tailored technical and regulatory support to drive the delivery of our customer projects to the highest standard. Reporting to the COO, you will lead a team of Study Managers and Senior Study Managers alongside having responsibility for capacity planning, training and employee development to drive and achieve revenue targets within the team. You will also have an active role in the commercial and scientific development of the operational technical area through strategic marketing and research and development activities in collaboration and partnering with the Marketing Director and Chief Scientific Officer. This also includes ensuring technical support for our Sales colleagues to progress customer enquiries.
WHAT WE EXPECT YOU TO DO
Management
- Lead and motivate the team to maintain high standards of morale and culture that assist in the delivery of a quality service.
- Ensure that all team members have meaningful goals and objectives related to their job role and company objectives.
- Conduct performance reviews in accordance with our company policies.
- Undertake all line manager duties associated with the role through guiding, coaching, mentoring and identify learning and development opportunities for the team in support of their development
- Champion and embed continuous improvement within the team and wider business to drive new processes and procedural updates to make the department run smoother.
Delivery of Customer Studies
- Independently manage a broad range of complex customer studies as required, adhering to the quality management system.
- Assume the role of project lead to provide project continuity throughout the contract and study life cycles, supporting Senior Study Managers to scope projects and prepare proposals and contracts. This also involves reporting on any movement of study deliverable dates.
- Support Sales team with contract and proposal generation directly where required, taking responsibility for accurate costing within their technical area.
- Provide tailored technical and regulatory support to their team to enable delivery of excellent customer projects.
- In collaboration with the Senior Study Managers, ensure customer studies are adequately resourced, delivered on time and executed to the quality and standards we set within the business.
- Define how customer studies are conducted in accordance with the Quality Management System.
- Develop and oversee training to ensure that their team has the skills required to manage a broad range of customer studies.
- Drive revenue within the team and support the Senior Study Managers to accurately forecast on customer studies.
Sales/Account Management
- Support the sales team by confidently handling ‘new project’ calls as the technical lead, understand customer requirements and distilling into a feasible study design that will meet the customer’s needs which is deliverable to support overall growth of accounts, sales and revenue for the Company.
- Sales document management; contract/proposal/change order drafting and costing (including technical review of others’) Account mapping activities: understanding your service area and how it applies to current and prospective customers.
Strategic Marketing/Product Management
- Produce and create engaging content on our website to promote our services, our products and what we do. This extends to blogs, whitepapers, marketing materials, technical notes etc., to support marketing campaigns
- Train and mentor Senior Study Managers to fulfil the ‘Product Specialists’ element of their role.
- Assist in the development and implementation of methods to assess the continued improvement of, and profitability of studies within their team.
- Generate and standardise commercial/sales materials e.g., proposals, contracts, presentations and data to streamline and improve the sales process
- Prepare data, presentations and scientific materials in support of representing AA at conferences (either first hand or in support of colleagues)
- Provide training on our service portfolio to the commercial teams.
Research and Development
- In collaboration with the Director of Marketing and the CSO, define service improvements and portfolio extensions within your division.
- Partnering with the CSO, oversee the efficient development of service improvements and additions to your service portfolio.
Health and Safety
Ensure the company is following Health and Safety regulations and policies to minimise risk in the workplace, through an active team focus on Health and Safety topics.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone who has:
- At least two years’ experience in leading a team to deliver technical customer projects within a contract research organisation (CRO) or equivalent.
- Significant experience in the management of a broad range of customer studies within a CRO or equivalent.
- At least three years’ experience in confidently leading communication on a technical level with clients.
- Experience of the sales process within a CRO, including technical scoping of projects, contract generation and review and provision of costs for prospective projects.
- Demonstratable technical and regulatory expertise within a relevant field.
- Technical and commercial awareness in a similar capacity.
- Degree in a relevant field with significant technical experience.
