  3. From Operations to R&D in 400 days

As you’ve probably heard, Antibody Analytics is expanding, and so is our development opportunities. To celebrate our growth, we’ve sat down with a very talented lady who, with her hard work and determination, has attained a secondment in the Research and Development (R&D) department. Amy Graham has taken opportunities in her stride and injected enthusiasm into the organisation.

“I guess you could say binge-watching Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) was the catalyst to my career in science. From the screen to the classroom, whilst at Peebles High School, I decided to follow my scientific curiosity and independently undertook laboratory work as an intern at The Roslin Institute, which cemented my love of research.

“After acquiring a first-class honours degree in Cell Biology at the University of Stirling, I spent a year at Merck Millipore as a Manufacturing Scientist in the Tissue Culture department. It was a great introduction to working in the pharmaceutical sector as it encouraged me to seek out further industry-led work with an academic edge.

“In 2018, I jumped at the chance to work for a unique organisation. I started working at Antibody Analytics as a Cell Culture Scientist. After two years of learning and personal development, I moved to Operations as a Junior Study Scientist where I was exposed to a variety of projects. When I saw the R&D position advertised in 2020, I knew I had to apply.

“With a competitive application process, I was thrilled to find out that my passion and enthusiasm for the project had translated into a position in the Antibody Analytics R&D team.

“The transition into the R&D department was initially a steep learning curve for me. I had to get up to speed with new theoretical and technical aspects of the projects. In this role, I must consider the question and ways to answer it, both designing and performing experiments. The secondment has been a case of learning as you go, a hands-on experience that has given me the opportunity to project manage, build independence and resilience, and develop a critical eye.

“Seeing a project move towards its final stages is incredibly rewarding, especially when the results have direct clinical relevance. Thanks to Antibody Analytics, I can walk the bridge between research and industry. Don’t get me wrong, working at a forward-thinking organisation can sometimes have its challenges, but the variety of assays, lifelong learning, and progression opportunities, certainly, makes it worthwhile.”
